On May 6, 1986, TFND was founded with one goal in mind- ending commercial tobacco use in North Dakota. 40 years later, we are celebrating a huge birthday by showing how much we’ve accomplished, what still needs to be done, and how your help will be critical to it all!
Welcome to TFND’s 40k for 40 years campaign homepage!
Tobacco Free North Dakota has a long history of working to undo the damages of tobacco in our state. We helped write and advocate for the ND Clean Indoor Act in 1987, which created two new sections of ND Century Code protecting clean indoor air. This law started the movement that became the 2012 smoke-free air law that protects all North Dakotans today.
Since that win, we’ve been at the forefront of advocating for sound, evidence-based policy at the local, state, and federal level- increasing the North Dakota cigarette tax in 1993, more than 50 policies in local communities from 1990 to today, and supporting the tobacco Master Settlement Agreement, which North Dakota helped litigate and settle in 1998. We’ve been involved in decades of policy development, helping protect all North Dakotans from the number cause of preventable death: tobacco use.
It’s not just policy work. We spend our time helping shape the next generation of leaders as well through our youth advocacy efforts. Our Youth Action Summits and Day at the Capitol events let students make a direct difference by engaging with policymakers, learning how to lead and become advocates in their own communities.
Now, as we turn 40 years, we are asking for your help to keep our momentum going!
